Not sure how it would entice you into eating burgers!

Looks like a bit of craic all right….

These wonderful photographs were taken the amazing Steven Siegel. He has been documenting New York City’s five boroughs (and beyond) for over three decades now…. you can view more of his collection here.

Mike the Headless Chicken (April 1945 – March 1947), was a Wyandotte chicken that lived for
18 months after his head had been mostly cut off. Thought by many to be a hoax, the bird’s
owner took him to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City to establish the facts of the story.

Once his fame had been established, Mike began a career of touring sideshows in the company
of such other creatures as a two-headed calf. He was also photographed for dozens of
magazines and papers, featuring in Time and Life magazines.

Trees cocooned in spiders webs after flooding in Sindh, Pakistan

An unexpected side-effect of the flooding in parts of Pakistan has been that millions of spiders climbed up into the trees
to escape the rising flood waters. Because of the scale of the flooding and the fact that the water has taken so long to recede,
many trees have become cocooned in spiders webs.People in this part of Sindh have never seen this phenonemon
before – but they also report that there are now less mosquitos than they would expect, given the amoungt of stagnant,
standing water that is around. It is thought that the mosquitos are getting caught in the webs and may be reducing
the risk of malaria, which would be one blessing for the people of Sindh, facing so many other hardships after the floods.

It rained solidly for 8 hours right after this was taken…

New York based illustrator Matt Huynh visited the Occupy Wall Street protests a few days ago and drew every placard he saw.

“I’ve consciously tried to include them all without imposing my own judgment as a bit of an outside eye. (Although you’d be kidding yourself if you think any of us are really on the ‘outside’ of this one).” Oh, and  Matt has very kindly provided these high resolution A2 posters for anyone to download and print for Free in black and white.

The Terminal Bar was located on the south east corner of 41st Street and 8th Avenue in New York city. Where now stands a Schnippers!

The bar had a reputation as one of the roughest bars in the city and was located across from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. It featured in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and then subject of this award winning documentary short film, directed by Stefan Nadelman.

A good friend of mine pointed me in the direction of this project the other day…and I had to share it.

Souvenirs in my view are nearly always tacky, but not these ones. If any of you have ever been to Barcelona, you’ll know La Rambla is one of the main tourist spots in the city, and that it is host to lots of stalls that sell the tackiest of tacky souvenirs. It is also host to a plethe of street performers / living statues. So, it had to be the obvious choice of location for this fantastic project – Be Your Own Souvenir from Barcelona based blablabLab.

The project uses custom software developed using openKinect and openFrameworks. To create a toy soldier like souvenir of yourself. The visitors use 3 kinect sensors to create a 360-degree scan which creates input pointclouds. Meshlab then uses these combined pointclouds to create a Poisson reconstruction before being fed into a cnc machine which prints out the souvenir. Check out the photos and video. The project aims to connect street users, arts and science, linking them to under-laying spaces and their own realities. The installation was enjoyed during two weekends in January 2011 by the tourists, neighbours of La Rambla and citizens of Barcelona, a city that faces a trade-off between identity and gentrification, economic sustainability and economic growth. Nice.

It’s hard to believe it has been seven whole years to the day since the passing of John Peel. He has to be one of the most
popular and respected DJs and broadcasters in the world. He broke the mould.

He was one of the first to play reggae, punk and hip hop on British radio. Artists whose careers he helped to launch include
Jimi Hendrix, Joy Division,The Undertones,The Smiths and The White Stripes. An absolute legend of a man.

Here’s a great interview with the man himself. Hopefully this will give us a little more insight into the man behind the
microphone, splash a bit of colour on a kaleidoscopic life, and explain exactly why John Peel is so greatly missed by so
many music fans.

I saw Julien Vallée speak at OFFF Paris Last year… and was I totally blown away. When this quietly spoken and immensely talented Canadian art director took to the stage, he had the 3000 attendees in the Grande Hall de la Villette absolutely captivated for his hour long presentation.

Anyway enough of my shmolzing… He’s just compleeted a new promo for MTV Australia.

Oh, and here are the wonderfull Sponsor titles he did for OFFF Paris last year too.
